Pendant lighting is one of the most popular types of lighting when it comes to home décor due to the flair and character you can add to any spade. Pendant lights come in many shapes, sizes, colours and styles and tend to be used in one of two ways. Either as a cluster or as a stand-alone light fixture to create a focal point to your room. Pendants can provide both functional task or accent lighting as well as be decorative to highlight and compliment a space.
There are a couple of things to consider when selecting a pendant light:
1. What is the purpose and style of the space?
2. How large is your space, so how much light do you need?
While pendants are versatile you do need to ensure that any pendant is proportionate to your space and provides enough light. This will mean that the size of your pendant will vary. The larger your room, the bigger the pendant should be.
Pendants are also commonly used in the kitchen and look great over an island bench. Combining multiple pendants along the length of your island will offer better illumination for tasks and balance the lighting for your space. The number of pendants for a kitchen will depend on the size of your kitchen island. Divide your island into smaller sections and hang more than one pendant. For example, if your island is 1.5-2 meters long, you can easily divide it into two sections by hanging two medium size pendant lights. For islands that are 2.5-3 meters you can divide it into thirds and hang smaller pendant lights instead.
Remember, there really is no set rule with pendant lighting. Have fun with the space but always keep in mind the purpose and style of your room and how large the space is.
